If you are using a Cortina as a
donor vehicle for you Locost the following may be of interest to you. I
would also recommend reading the article on options for widening the
chassis although a chassis of the standard dimensions can be used with
Cortina parts with few changes.
The Cortina rear differential is larger than the Escort unit while not
necessary a little more clearance at the rear of the transmission
tunnel may help. (Page 55 Fig 4.19 the 3.5in / 89mm dim) If the engine
is an OHC unit (Pinto) then this is considerably taller than the OHV
(Kent/ xFlow) unit. You are either going to have bits sticking out of
the bonnet or bulges in the bonnet unless you raise the scuttle, bonnet
and nosecone height/line to clear it. Remember a clear forward view
from the driver’s seat is part of the requirements for SVA.
The alternator is a bit tight on the upright FU1 but can be
accommodated with a bit of a modification to the bracket. Depending on
how low you dare go with the engine, you may require a modification to
the position (or shape) of G1 to ensure clearance for the starter
motor.
The Cortina radiator is too big, use an Escort or similar. The Cortina
steering column can be used but trying to use the rack will cause you
problems.
If you have kept the front of the car the same as the book then I would
advise getting an Escort - it will save you a number of problems. Even
if the front is wider the Escort rack (with extensions to the track rod
arms) is an easier unit to install. |
